BookMooch

I ran across an interesting book swap site called BookMooch recently. It's a "community for exchanging used books". Here's how they say it works:

1. Type in books you want to give away.

2. Receive requests from others for your books.

3. Mail your books and receive points.

4. Ask for books from others with your points.

I've never used it, but it sounds great. And--if you're like me, and have lots of books to give away, but don't really need to be acquiring new books all the time--they have an option to give your points to a long list of charities they work with. Now there's a good idea.

I'm sure there are other services out there like this. Has anyone used this one or any others?

Oh I love BookMooch! I've only been a member for a few months but I've already sent out books and asked for books. Haven't had any problems and it's just so much fun. I highly recommend it.
I've heard of a few others (Paperbackswap) is one that comes to mind but I think they deal with more of the mass market bestsellers. Nothing wrong there but the variety seems a bit more limited than what's available on BookMooch.

Iliana--yeah, when I searched for stuff on BookMooch I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of materials. And the presentation was so nice, too--some of the swappers even had cover art! I think I'll give it a try...

Gentle Reader, I've been doing BookMooch for a couple of months, too. At first, I was concerned with the amount of money spent on postage and buying packaging. Now I just save the packaging used on books sent to me. Usually postage is only $1.59. I'm finding now that receiving a book has cost me less than a $1. It's a very nice program.

I also like that I put books on a wish list and when they are available I'm notified. What could be easier? And usually I have such a stack waiting to be read that it's no big deal waiting for a book.

booklogged, I've signed up, so I'm looking forward to using the service!
I don't mind waiting for a book either--my "to read" stack is about to tip over!

I love Bookmooch. There's a similar book-swap website called www.paperbackswap.com, which essentially does the same thing but isn't nearly as cute. : )
