Buying Books for the Holidays

I love this idea! Amy, who was the mastermind behind Book Blogger Awareness Week, has a new project, called "I'm Buying Books for the Holidays".

Here's what Amy has to say about the project:
Have you been reading the book news lately? It's not pretty. I feel like everyday I'm hearing about plummeting profits, massive lay-offs, book stores and libraries (!!) closing. We are living in dark and difficult book times.

Shortly after BBAW (Book Blogger Appreciation Week), when I started to recover from that massive effort, my mind started working again...I thought...what if we could unite and energize this fantastic community of book bloggers and readers to make a conscious effort to "when possible, buy books" for the holidays. It would be a small contribution that we could make to show our appreciation to the people who bring us books, to give back to the industry that we love, and to help save books.
So, if you're buying anything for anyone this holiday season, consider buying books :).

I am so with you on this one! I have lost track of how many books I have bought as gifts for this season so far. It is scary to think that with the Kindle and everything coming out that books will someday be a thing of the past. What will we do?!

Oh no...books can NOT go away. I still love holding an actual book over reading it through the computer or something.

I do love this idea though and I signed up for sure! I should be posting about YA books to get this holiday season soon on the blog as well. :)

I've been pondering about this before bloggers rolled out the book-buying campaign. Today the NY Times publishes an article on the grim prospect on book sale this holiday season. I'm hoping the enduring allure of books will actually help with the sales. I mean, think about it, books are more cheaper than these luxurious items. I'm drafting a list of friends to whom I'll give books.

j.danger--I always buy books as gifts so this is a no-brainer for me anyway, and I'm scared for the future of books, too! Yikes!

shooting stars--I actually don't think books will go away, but I do lament the idea that less and less will be published. What will the criteria for publication be? Only possible bestsellers? That's just not okay!

matt--I saw that article, too, in the arts section. I think you're right, that books are cheaper than many luxury items, yet they are still prestigious. I also think that it's easy to personalize book choices for people--most people really feel special when you pick out books for them based on what you think they will like, right?

Books are my favorite things to give as gifts. I really enjoy matching a book to a person. I hate all other kinds of shopping, holiday or otherwise, but book shopping, I never tire of that!

stefanie--lol, that's part of why I like giving books, too--I hate almost all other forms of shopping!
