Booking Through Thursday--Time is of the Essence

Today's Booking Through Thursday question is:

1. Do you get to read as much as you WANT to read?
(I’m guessing #1 is an easy question for everyone?)

2. If you had (magically) more time to read–what would you read? Something educational? Classic? Comfort Reading? Escapism? Magazines?

Yes, number one is easy to answer. No, I don't get to read as much as I want to. I don't know a single soul who thinks he or she has enough time to read. If you meet that person, let me know--because I want his or her life! As it is, I try to sneak reading time into crazy places like the carpool line...

As for question two, I'd say that if I had more time, I would read more of the books on the pile that is threatening to take over my room. I have an enormous TBR pile, so I'd tackle that first, with all that extra reading time the reading fairy is magically giving me. Then I'd go and read all the classics I didn't read in college. Then I'd just keep finding more...there are just so many interesting books out there.

I wonder how much time would really be enough? How much time do you have to read? How much more would you like?

LOL
I'd be so interested in seeing a picture of your room.

I usually read two hours over breakfast every morning, taking my time and sitting at the sunniest spot at my neighborhood coffee shop. (It's San Francisco...everyone has their coffee at the cafes). Then I'll slip in some reading time when no students come for office hour. I'll read a bit more at home in the evening since I don't watch much TV. That said, I'm happy with the amount of time I have for reading, but I would like more time!

Vacation is great opportunity to catch up with the lost time. I can be completely oblivious of the happenings, shut off the cell phone, and read for hours on end. :)

I like to read whenever I can and make time everyday. My TBR pile stays consistently the same size. Just as it starts getting whittled down, the used bookstore calls my name. :)

If I just had an extra hour a day, that would be nice...

That's a good question: how much time is enough time? I think if I were able to spend at least half of my day reading, I'd be happy. There is definitely such a thing as reader's burn-out and I worry that if I read too much I might suffer from it more often than I do (at least twice a year).

These days, I get my best reading done just before bed and on the plane when I'm traveling for work.

karin--Lol, you would surely laugh if you could see a picture of my crazy stacks of books. But I would cry!

matt--it sounds like you are the master of maximizing your reading time! I'm always fitting it in around the edges. But you're right about vacation--I have to try to pack paperbacks so I don't go over the luggage weight limits!

robin--I hear you about that pile! And the siren song of the used bookstore :)

jeane--I'd take an hour, too!

J.S.--I think you're right about the reader burnout, but it's been so long since I've even been able to approach reader satiety, much less burnout! I read just before bed, too. And on vacation!

Oh never, never enough time for reading. If I had the time, I'd turn to the classics, I think, as so many are slow reads that reward patience. But now I'm working only part-time, I have had more time for reading. Oddly enough, I haven't noticed my totals going up.....

litlove--I feel the same way about the classics--if I had another life, I'd spend more hours slowly reading the classics, too!

I'm considering posting on this, even though Thursday is long gone ... to be honest, there's a limit to the amount of time I am capable of reading, so my answer to the first question isn't necessarily no. But most of the time, yes, I want more time to read, and I'd read more in just about every category out there.

Dorothy W.--I've been thinking more about this since I posted, and I've realized that I may think I want more reading time than I could actually use--mostly because I'm so short on any time for myself right now! But it is an interesting question to ponder, isn't it?
