Opportunity for maximizing your charitable giving...

In these tough times I'm looking for ways to extend my charitable giving dollar. I've cleaned out my closets and given away much more this holiday season in a hope that it will help the needy, and I've been delivering canned goods to my local food bank, whose lines have already been obviously longer this year.

The ladies at Coffee Chat With 1000 Wise Women have another way to help out--a contest! It's called Easy as 1-2-3: Money for your Favorite Charity, and I'm clicking over there now to nominate my favorite charity so it will be in the running to receive the $100 that the site will donate to the lucky winner!

They're also adding $1 for every comment posted through December 31 in support of the charity that wins.

Sounds like a good way to support a good cause this holiday season. Hope you'll join me.

What a lovely gesture - you are such a kind, thoughtful person. I tell you what I am certainly going to do and that's go through my wardrobes and donate lots of clothes I don't wear much anymore to charity.

litlove--I think I did more good to myself by cleaning out those closets! But thank you for your kind words :)

Hi,

I'm running a charitable reading event in 2009 called The Year of Readers. Perhaps you'd like to check out the blog (http://yearofreaders.blogspot.com) and consider signing up?

My family agreed to donate to charity in lieu of gifts this year. I can't take credit for it, as it was my mom's idea, but it makes things a lot easier!

What great ideas - this year it does seem important to give what we can, doesn't it? I've always been fond of foodbanks as a place to give, it seems like such a direct way to help families in need.

jodie--I'm going over to sign up. Thanks for the heads up!

jessica--we've done that with my husband's family--one year we did the heifer project, and everyone donated specific animals. Good idea, mom :)

verbivore--I donate to the foodbank quite often because my kids' school is always running a food drive, and the foodbank is also nearby, so it's convenient. But it's especially nice during the holidays when we celebrate with festive meals, to be able to help someone hungry to eat :)
