Reader's Diary

We enjoyed our whirlwind trip back to the rainy east coast, and, to my amazement, I actually got some reading done. I finished Vanina Marsot's Foreign Tongue: A Novel of Life and Love in Paris, and Ginnah Howard's novel Night Navigation. The two novels couldn't be more different, but both were enjoyable in their own ways.  Now I'm really, really behind in my reviews...oh, well, c'est la vie.

I had fun talking books with my husband's sister and his cousin, both voracious readers whose tastes generally mesh with mine. Our cousin mentioned Aravind Adiga's Booker-prize-winning novel The White Tiger as a must-read.  It's now more firmly on my list!

My BookMooched copy of Nick Hornby's Housekeeping vs. the Dirt arrived this afternoon, which absolutely made my day.  I love when something on my BookMooch wishlist pops up in my email, and I'm quick enough to get it!  I was lucky enough to snag this copy, and I'm really looking forward to starting it.

Must start organizing my thoughts about all these books I want to write about.  Maybe this weekend.  But I want to see the Star Trek movie, and then there's Mother's Day...I'm guessing I'll be just as far behind on reviews on Monday.

What do you all have planned for this weekend?

Welcome home! I think all the FoB peeps are on similar wavelengths these days. I finished Foreign Tongue this week...I really enjoyed it, although the ending sure surprised me.

I recently read Housekeeping vs. the Dirt - and enjoyed it very much! It sounds like you had a nice trip - and got a commendable amount of reading done!

softdrink--The ending of Foreign Tongue really surprised me, too--almost didn't fit with the book! Plus there was more sex than I expected, but that's not necessarily a negative :)

carrie k--can't wait to start the Hornby, he's so darned clever, he always makes me laugh. It was a good trip, but I'm happy to be home!

You were so lucky to get that copy! I've had it on my BM wishlist for ages, and never had a chance. I finally caved in and just bought it for myself.

Star Trek is definitely on my agenda this weekend. In fact, I juts my tickets to go see it tonight! You'll love Housekeeping vs. the Dirt! I just reviewed his last Believer book, Shakespeare Wrote for Money, which kind of bummed me out because it's his last one. =(

Glad you're back!

Jeane--you wouldn't believe how many times I got the BM email saying a copy was available, then clicked on it and found it was already gone!

J.S.--I'm jealous you're going to see Star Trek tonight--have fun! My best chance of seeing it this weekend is on Mother's Day--fingers crossed! I'm really looking forward to reading Nick Hornby--always entertaining.

I'm glad you had a good time. Isn't it great to talk to someone who loves books too? It's becoming rarer around here and so sad. I need to go find The White Tiger now!

We are going to see Star Trek tomorrow. I'm so excited!

I'm not seeing Star Trek till next weekend - we're going with our Trekkiest friends :-).

My copy of Foreign Tongue arrived via UPS this week, and I'm looking forward to reading it. And one of these days I am going to treat myself to that whole set of Nick Hornby's essays from The Believer - I think it's at three or four books now (?).

Glad you had a good trip!

I'm glad you had a good time! Welcome back!

Love, love, love Nick Hornby.

And, lucky you, getting to mooch this one! I actually never managed to mooch a single book, so eventually I gave up and unmooched myself. Now, I'm just a PBS girl.

Jaimie--I know, it's so great to talk books with other book lovers. I can't wait to see Star Trek. Tell me how you like it!

Florinda--My trekkiest friends saw the movie tonight! I want to read The Believer books, too. Let me know if you like Foreign Tongue :)

Bookfool--it was a good, if quick, trip--thanks. I love Hornby, too--what a wit! It is rare indeed to have luck mooching :)

Bybee--that sounds like a lovely, bookish weekend. You'll have to let us know what books come your way!

I'm behind with reviews, too! I read the biography of the Mitford sisters by Mary Lovell and loved it, and then Lessing's Martha Quest, which I also loved, and... well, and so it goes on. But I had nothing planned for this weekend other than lying on the sofa, recovering from the builders, lol!

Very glad to have you back safe and sound, and looking forward to hearing about those books just whenever the moment is right.

litlove--my sister-in-law gave me Martha Quest as a gift and I really, really want to read it. Your having read it might just give me the push I need. I hope you are having a relaxing respite from the building madness!

I am reading Foreign Tongue right now in prep for an interview/Q&A with the author. Not sure when that will post but I guess I have to finish the book first.

Seems like all the FOB'ers are reading the same books right now.

Jen--just started Loving Frank, now I'm really intrigued!

Ti--I am going to write something up for Foreign Tongue. Ooh, can't wait to read your author interview and Q&A! I got her to sign my book, and she seemed very nice. Yes, great minds think alike, and we're all reading the same books--kind of a nice feeling :)

Saturdays I have time to explore new blogs and relax, especially if it's rainy! My kids are occupied and we're waiting for the rain to pass before going to the library. I bet you all had a great time at Star Trek.
