Today's Booking Through Thursday question is:
What books do you have next to your bed right now? How about other places in the house? What are you reading?
Next to my bed is a precarious pile of books. On top is Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters, which I am reading for my book group, and which I read once before, maybe fifteen years ago. I like it!
Under that are several other books that I plan to read next, including Chang-Rae Lee's A Gesture Life, and a novel called Bone Worship, by Elizabeth Eslami. Underneath that is a copy of Walter Mosley's book This Year You Write Your Novel--all I can say to that is "Ha!".
Around the house are so many other books I don't have the space to mention them. Next to the TV is a copy of Kim Boyce's new book on whole grain baking, called Good to the Grain: Baking with Whole-Grain Flours. Yes, I flip through it while watching TV. Yes, I have a rich baking fantasy life.
What books are next to your bed, or lying around your house right now?

I've been slowly substituting whole-grain flour into some of my recipes that usually just call for white flour, and my fam has grown to like it! I'd love to learn how to really bake, though. Never made a loaf entirely from scratch, yet.
Jeane-I'm enjoying this book so far. One nice thing about it is that though most of the recipes call for sort of exotic flours, she says you can usually substitute whole wheat instead. I'm pretty good at cakes, pies and cookies, but I'm a little intimidated by yeast breads...
I have Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' lying on a chair in my living room at the moment. In the past, I could never read unless I was in a quiet room, but now I've trained my brain to block out any noise from the tv.
Yes, it's the yeast breads that intimidate me for some reason. I can finally make a pretty decent pie-crust from scratch, and cookies and muffins. But bread? no.
Spangle--lol, with three kids I've learned to tune out a multitude of noises and distractions so I can read!
Jeane--Exactly! By the way, I learned a good method for a puff-pastry style pie crust from Gesine Bullock on her blog "Confections of a Closet Master Baker"--that was something I'd also been afraid of in the past!
I'm reading Jane Yolen's "Take Joy: A Writer's Guide to Loving the Craft" and I have already found reason to quote it, so it's good! LOL I have a big pile of stuff waiting for me, including "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle.
Silent Spring next to my bed and Stoner on the floor of my car.
Momlarky--I really enjoy Jane Yolen, so I'll have to get a copy of Take Joy--thanks!
Little Miss Nomad--Ooh, Silent Spring is heavy stuff, and I haven't read Stoner, but have heard it's good. Love that you have a book on the floor of your car. I forgot I have Aleksandar Hemon's book Love and Obstacles on the floor of mine ;)
